Stump Grinding Services on the Gold Coast & Tweed Coast

After a tree has been removed, the stump remains - and left untreated, it becomes a long-term problem. Old stumps attract termites in the warm, humid Gold Coast and Tweed Coast climate, create trip hazards for families, and prevent you from using that part of your yard for anything useful. Professional stump grinding is the fast, clean, permanent solution.

Stump grinding uses a specialised machine with a rotating cutting wheel that chips away the stump and major surface roots to 300-400mm below ground level. The process is surprisingly quick - most residential stumps are ground out in 30 minutes to an hour - and leaves the area ready for turf, garden beds, or any other landscaping you have planned.

Our network of arborists carry a range of stump grinding equipment to suit different situations. From compact, narrow-access grinders that fit through standard garden gates to powerful, self-propelled machines for large hardwood stumps, we have the right tool for every job. Most customers combine tree removal and stump grinding in one visit for the most cost-effective result.

Why You Should Remove That Stump

Many property owners put off stump removal, thinking it's a cosmetic issue. But there are practical and safety reasons to get it done sooner rather than later:

    • Termite risk - Decaying stumps are a magnet for termites. In the Gold Coast and Tweed Coast region, subterranean termites are a serious and expensive problem. A rotting stump near your house creates a direct pathway for termites to find their way to your home's structural timber.
    • Trip hazards - Stumps are a liability, especially for families with young children or elderly residents. A stump hidden by grass can cause falls and injuries.
    • Regrowth and suckering - Some species, particularly figs and Camphor Laurels, will continue to send up new shoots from an unground stump and root system. These suckers can be persistent and difficult to control without grinding the stump out completely.
    • Landscaping and building - You can't turf, pave, plant, or build over a stump. If you want to use that space in your yard, the stump needs to go.
    • Aesthetics - An old stump detracts from the appearance of your property. Removing it creates a clean, finished look.
    • Root damage - Surface roots from old stumps can continue to push up paths, driveways, and garden edging. Grinding the stump and major roots eliminates this problem.

    4

    Stump Grinding

Using the appropriate machine, the operator grinds each stump to 300-400mm below ground level, including any major surface roots. The process is quick - most stumps take 30 to 60 minutes.

    5

    Cleanup & Finish

The grindings are either removed, used as backfill, or left as mulch - your choice. The area is raked level and left clean, ready for your next landscaping project.

    Stump Grinding vs Other Methods

Stump grinding is by far the most common and practical method. A rotating cutting wheel chips the stump below ground level in minutes. It's fast, clean, and the area is immediately usable. This is what we recommend for 95% of residential stumps.

Stump poisoning involves drilling holes in the stump and applying herbicide to kill the root system. While cheap, it takes months to work, leaves the stump above ground in the meantime, and doesn't remove the physical stump - you still have to wait for it to rot away, which can take years.

Excavation (digging out) involves removing the entire stump and root ball using an excavator or by hand. This is sometimes necessary for construction purposes where deep foundations are required, but it's significantly more expensive and invasive than grinding. It also creates a large hole that needs filling.

For most residential properties on the Gold Coast and Tweed Coast, stump grinding is the fastest, most cost-effective, and least disruptive option. Our arborists will recommend the best approach for your specific situation.
