Palm Tree Care & Removal on the Gold Coast & Tweed Coast
Palms are one of the defining features of the Gold Coast and Tweed Coast landscape. From the iconic Cocos Palms lining suburban streets to the stately Norfolk Island Pines along the Kingscliff and Cabarita Beach foreshores, palms are everywhere in this region. But they also create some of the most common tree management headaches for property owners.
Cocos Palms in particular are one of our most requested removal jobs. These fast-growing palms produce large quantities of messy orange fruit that stains driveways, attracts fruit bats and rats, and clogs gutters.
Their root systems can crack paths and pool surrounds, and as they grow taller, the falling fronds become a genuine safety hazard. Tweed Shire Council classifies Cocos Palms as an environmental weed and encourages their removal.
Whether you need a single palm cleaned and de-fronded, a row of Cocos Palms removed from a body corporate property, or a tall Norfolk Island Pine taken down near a house, our network of specialist palm arborists has the experience and equipment to handle the job safely. We use non-invasive climbing techniques that protect palm health, and every job includes full debris removal and site cleanup.
When You Need Palm Tree Services
Palm trees require different management to broadleaf trees. Here are the most common reasons Gold Coast and Tweed Coast property owners call us for palm work:
- Cocos Palm removal - The number one palm job across the region. These palms grow fast, produce copious messy fruit, attract pests, and can't be reduced in height. Removal is the permanent solution.
- Annual de-fronding and cleaning - Dead fronds hanging in the crown are a fire hazard, pest harbour, and falling risk. Annual cleaning keeps palms tidy and safe. This is especially common in body corporate and strata properties.
- Seed pod and fruit removal - Many palm species produce heavy seed clusters that drop from height and create a mess below. Regular removal keeps paths and gardens clean.
- Palm stump removal - After a palm is cut down, the stump needs grinding to prevent regrowth and reclaim the space for landscaping.
- Structural assessment - Palms that have been damaged by storms, struck by lightning, or affected by disease may need professional assessment to determine whether they're safe to retain or need removal.
- Developer and construction clearing - New developments across Pottsville, Kingscliff, and the Gold Coast often require palm removal as part of site preparation.

Council Regulations for Palm Tree Removal
Palm removal regulations vary depending on the species and your council area. In the Tweed Shire, Cocos Palms are classified as environmental weeds and generally don't require a permit for removal.
However, other species - particularly native Bangalow Palms and Cabbage Tree Palms - may be protected under tree preservation orders. Norfolk Island Pines, while not technically palms, are also subject to specific protections in some coastal zones.
On the Gold Coast, palm removal is governed by the City Council's vegetation management code. Most non-protected palms on private residential property can be removed without a permit, but palms in environmental overlays or development zones may require approval. Our arborists know the regulations for both councils and will confirm whether any permits are needed during your free onsite assessment.
